For the Crumble
Humble Crumble became a viral hit on social media as the 'world's first dedicated crumble bakery'. So much so I had to try.
I found myself dropping my my mixed berry crumble (with custard) on the floor. As I spooned away, the pot slowly moved around the tray and tipped the tray and pot to the floor... but this is not a sob story
I went home that day and thought about how the packaging could be elevated in some way, in the hope that no crumble finds itself on the floor again.
Early Sketching/Problem Solving
I wanted this solution to be as easy to integrate as possible, as well as being the least intrusive as possible (both for the customers and the business). After all, the vast majority of these trays go straight to the bin after use
After an extended amount of hands on experience (and eating crumble) I experimented and tested different executions to find a strong usability - against - cost sweetspot.
Other concepts involved the use of 'wings' that would fold in to wards the centre of the tray, creating a valley. The circular cut out would provide a three-dimensional form, securing the cup into place. Another concept featured a fold over lid, and a separate piece of card that would sit inside the tray.
Whilst all of these concepts would help provide that support, these may not be the most efficient to produce or time efficient for Crumble Artists to assemble during busy trading.

Creating a Secure Fit

The chosen concept would utilise a piece of card with tabs that would locate into dedicated slots in the tray. When this piece of card is located into the slots in the tray, it creates an elegant upwards curve and thus creates a guard around the pot, locking it into place.
A simple but elegant looking solution that would require minimal changes to manufacture.
Pros of Design
- Uses the least amount of material possible, keeping production costs low
- No Creasing required during production, reducing the amount of processes required to produce and keeping production costs low
- The most time efficient solution to produce
- The most time efficient solution for Crumble Artists to assemble in-store
- Additional space for Humble Crumble branding

Cons of Design
- Adjustments required to the existing Tray (two cut-outs required)
- Separate components would mean two SKU's to maintain
